Guide For Donated Egg Recipients

Donated egg treatment is the only chance for many women to fall pregnant and experience the beauty of motherhood. Today, almost a quarter of couples in Europe are infertile and the numbers are rising. The cause of infertility is often caused by genetic burden, various diseases and increasing age of first-time parents, but poor environment or inadequate lifestyle are no exception. If a couple is unable to conceive naturally even after a year of unprotected sexual intercourse, it is worth visiting an assisted reproduction clinic, having an examination and finding out the possible causes of infertility in both partners. Doctors from the IVF clinic will then suggest the most suitable treatment.  We will advise you on how the whole process works.

Information for egg recipients

In the event that doctors decide that a woman's infertility is the cause of the failure to conceive, the solution is donated eggs. Each assisted reproduction clinic, including the Gynem Clinic, has an extensive donor database as part of the donation program. Thanks to this database, it is possible to choose a suitable egg donor almost immediately at the beginning of treatment. This is a very successful method of infertility treatment.

Egg donation is legal in the Czech Republic and operates on a voluntary basis. Reproductive clinics are governed by Czech legislation and strict criteria set by the American Association for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). Many women choose to donate eggs to help others fulfil their dream of having a child. Another benefit of egg donation is that the donor receives a complete overview of her health and fertility through the initial examinations, as well as financial compensation for their time. Egg collection is a completely safe procedure and the whole process takes place under complete anonymity.

After collection, the eggs (oocytes) are fertilised in the laboratory with the sperm of their partner or an anonymous sperm donor, or frozen for further treatment cycles (cryoembryotransfer). The fertilised eggs are cultured for several days in a carefully monitored laboratory environment and transferred to the recipient's uterus at the appropriate time. The treatment is demanding for many couples financially, mentally and physically. However, this is the best chance to conceive their own child even for couples who had no other hope. In addition, experienced doctors and staff in IVF clinics, with their rich experience, are a great support throughout such moments.

What is an IVF cycle?

IVF treatment or also in vitro fertilisation is one of the most reliable methods in the treatment of infertility. During artificial insemination, mature eggs and sperm are combined in laboratory conditions and the resulting embryo is transferred to the recipient's uterus after several days. In the first IVF cycle, the chance of getting pregnant is 39 - 57% and the risk of miscarriage is the same as when conceived naturally. In general, the older a woman is, the less her chances of getting pregnant with each cycle.

There are several causes of infertility in women. An IVF treatment cycle can be undergone by a woman who:

  • has obstructed ovaries, endometriosis or suffers from inflammatory adhesions in the pelvic area
  • does not have enough healthy eggs
  • is infertile due to genetic burden, disease or surgery

These are the most common causes of infertility in women, but there are other causes and sometimes it is not even possible to determine the reasons for infertility. Nevertheless, it is possible to undergo an IVF cycle. Infertility in women can sometimes be caused by male infertility or even from a combination in both partners. Infertility in men is determined by a so-called spermiogram (sperm analysis), which determines the amount, motility and health of sperm. In the case of male infertility, assisted reproduction clinics offer the possibility of using a sperm donor.

Before receiving fertilised eggs or transferring embryos to the uterus, the woman must undergo hormonal stimulation. It is usually about supporting the growth of the uterine lining (endometrium), which creates ideal conditions for embryo implantation. In addition, this can be supported by other special laboratory methods, such as assisted hatching, endometrial scratch, the use of EmbryoGlue or EmbryoGen mediums, and more.

Why choose donated eggs?

An egg donation program and infertility treatment with donated eggs is often the only hope for many couples to conceive their own offspring. Even with this process, of course, there is a certain risk that the embryo will not implant and miscarriage will occur. This risk is around 12% to 15% of cases and is essentially the same as the risk of miscarriage during a natural pregnancy. Depending on the number of embryos transferred, there is also the possibility of multiple pregnancies, however, nowadays only one fertilised egg is commonly transferred in most cases.

The IVF cycle itself is physically and emotionally demanding, but it is very safe. Future recipients have many questions about the use of egg donation and have many concerns. The best way to avoid them is to consult an expert. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
